從小跟從父親學習劍道的矢田部，在一次訓練過程中致父親重傷不治，從此意志消沉，沉迷酒色。 極具天賦的高中生羽田機緣巧合跟隨僧侶劍道大師光邑習武，並受其所托將一封信轉交給矢田部。 矢田部借機大鬧劍道部，包括羽田在內的營員集體潰敗。 矢田部無法面對已變成植物人的父親，整日沉溺在童年陰影和錯殺父親的愧疚中。 一個雷雨交加的夜裡，羽田在矢田部的必經之路上向他發起挑戰，並坦言自己曾經因為溺水而留下心理陰影，希望能和內心同樣痛苦的前輩一較高下，矢田部恍惚中重傷羽田。 矢田部的父親病逝，葬禮上矢田部儀態盡失，在光邑大師的安撫下，讀了父親寫給大師的一封信，其中聲明自己在喪妻之後一蹶不振，和兒子之間已生罅隙，自己一心求死，想命喪兒子劍下，但希望光邑培養兒子成材。 重整旗鼓的矢田部終於將要迎來和羽田一場正式的比賽。
